State Recognizes Mayor Gonzales, City of San José for Successful Historic Preservation Efforts
San José, California - The Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for 2000 was awarded today to San José Mayor Ron Gonzales, the City of San José Historic Landmarks Commission and the Preservation Action Council of San Jose for their leadership efforts in relocating and saving the historic Montgomery Hotel.
According to (Acting) State Historic Preservation Officer Daniel Abeyta, "This prestigious award is the only official preservation award presented by the State of California to worthy recipients in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of historic preservation." The awards were presented today in the Governor’s Office.
"Historic preservation is a key component of San José’s community character, and I am pleased our efforts have been recognized by Governor Davis," said Mayor Gonzales. "Creative thinking, strong community commitment, and an effective team effort were essential to saving the Montgomery as a piece of the City’s past for future generations to enjoy and appreciate."
On January 29, 2000, the San José Redevelopment Agency, the City of San José, the San José Historic Landmarks Commission and the Preservation Action Council of San Jose led the effort to relocate the Montgomery Hotel, built in 1911. The project moved the historic building 190 feet south of its original location at Paseo de San Antonio and First Street to make room for the expansion of the Fairmont Hotel. The unprecedented move of the 4,800-ton building took approximately four hours to complete.
