Mayor Gonzales Calls for Silicon Valley Energy Summit

San Jose, CA -San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales today called for a Silicon Valley energy summit to focus on the regional needs for energy, identify potential solutions and alternatives to address these needs, and to consider potential sites for future power plants.

"California and Silicon Valley both need a balanced energy plan that can meet growing energy requirements in the state and the region with both new supplies and conservation," said Mayor Gonzales.

"Before we can prepare solutions, however, we must first be sure we have a clear and accurate understanding of what the real energy outlook is for the short and long-term in our region, and what steps have already been taken."

"At the same time, we also must take steps to ensure that we can continue to protect our residents and neighborhoods by choosing sites that meet appropriate community criteria."

Gonzales made his announcement at a news conference today regarding his opposition to Calpine Corporation’s proposed Metcalf Energy Center in South San Jose. The Mayor expressed his concern that any new power generation facility must be located so that residential neighborhoods and the environment are protected.

"A reliable and adequate energy supply is essential to the continuing prosperity of our region and state. This is why I am asking Silicon Valley elected leaders to join me early next year to hear from energy experts, regulators, planners, customers, and the energy industry to help us make good regional choices for energy solutions in the future," said the mayor.

Gonzales noted that California Governor Gray Davis also has taken the lead for statewide energy planning.

"I look forward to working with the Governor to find good state and regional energy solutions that will keep our economy strong and will ensure quality of life in our communities."
