Mayor
Ron Gonzales launched this
Teacher Rental Housing
Assistance program on
April 28, 1999.
This Program helps
make it possible for
teachers to be able to
live and work in Silicon
Valley and nearby areas.
Given San José’s
property values, the cost
of moving into rental
housing can be a factor in
determining whether a
teacher accepts a job in
the city or not.
California
law allows for security
deposits in rental housing
of up to 200% the monthly
rent in unfurnished
apartments, and 300% the
monthly rent in furnished
apartments.
In recognition of the
tremendous value teachers
provide to our community,
and that teachers are
stable, responsible rental
residents, local companies
and properties owners have
agreed to require no more
than 20% of the monthly
rent as a security deposit
from qualified teachers.
