Safest Big City in America
San
Jose is the safest big city in
America, and one of the best prepared
for disasters and crises of
all types. We’re a city where
police work closely with residents to
keep neighborhoods safe,
and we make smart investments in
technology to help solve crimes and
save lives.
San
Jose Cuts Gang Related Arrests in Half
The
San Jose Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task
Force
is a national model for
crime prevention
and law enforcement that really works.
It brings together grassroots
organizations, schools,
law enforcement, and juvenile justice
officials together to focus our
community resources on
battling youth gangs, reducing crime,
and offering positive life
alternatives to San Jose youth.
The Task Force has delivered results,
and since 1995 has been instrumental
in helping San José
reduce its gang-related arrests by 47
percent.

Keeping
Our Schools Safe
The
Safe Schools Campus Initiative
is another model program that trains
principals, teachers,
and students on how to plan,
prepare, and respond during a crisis
on campus to keep our children
safe at school.
We focus both on effective
prevention and on swift coordinated
management
of campus incidents so that schools
are ready for catastrophic events,
whether a Columbine-type
shooting or even a terrorist attack.
San Jose’s program regularly
brings school staff, public safety
officials, emergency medical
services and social service providers
together for emergency planning
that reduces risk on campus.
San
Jose Residents Most Prepared in the U.S.
Where
can you find a program where neighbors
learn skills like disaster medical care,
disaster fire fighting, and light search
and rescue in an emergency?
Under San Jose Prepared!
over 1,600 residents have taken 16 hours
of classes in home preparedness, fire
suppression, disaster medicine and light
search and rescue. Mayor Gonzales has
publicly commended the program with his
annual good neighbor award.
"San
Jose is doing one of the best jobs, if
not the best job, in the country,"
says Olden Henson, former chairman of
the National League of Cities'
public-safety committee, regarding San
José’s preparedness.
