Making Our Neighborhoods Strong
San Jose is a city that puts its neighborhoods first.  Mayor Gonzales has challenged city government to view its role through the eyes of its residents, standing at the edge of their driveways.  Working together, City Hall and residents invest time, effort, and resources to improve neighborhoods; making San Jose a place everyone is proud to call home.

The Mayor’s favorite day of the week is Saturday.  That’s when he gets to go out and help people where they live -- in their neighborhoods. Mayor Gonzales can hear directly from them when he meets residents in their own communities whether its throwing out the first pitch at a little league baseball game, sharing a meal with seniors, planting trees at an elementary school, or helping out at a neighborhood clean-up.   These are just a few examples of how Mayor Gonzales spends his weekends in San José neighborhoods.

What is the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative?
In 2000 Mayor Gonzales created the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI).  His vision to pump additional funding into the neighborhoods was the catalyst for this program.  SNI is about strengthening communities.  This program is a $120 million effort to redirect San Jose's Redevelopment resources from large public projects to our neighborhoods with the greatest needs.  22 distinct neighborhoods have been identified to receive this funding for revitalization.

SNI is meant to beautify neighborhoods, expand community services, improve neighborhood safety, and empower neighborhood associations.  Utilizing a community-driven planning process, SNI empowers residents to set their own priorities and communicate their needs to City Hall.  In return, the City works as a partner to help residents achieve those goals.

San Jose Wins the War on Graffiti
Anti Graffiti Program - Graffiti is an eyesore that makes residents feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods.  The mission of the Anti-Graffiti Program (AGP) is to prevent and eliminate graffiti.  Utilizing a volunteer force of over 1500 citizens, city graffiti crews, and swift and effective law enforcement, San Jose’s AGP program has reduced graffiti by 95% in 3 1/2 years.  Under the AGP, San Jose residents and businesses can get graffiti eliminated anywhere in the city within 48 hours, seven days a week.

Litter Beware
Anti Litter Program –Just like graffiti, litter is a neighborhood eyesore.  San Jose’s litter effort, Pick up San José, focuses on three approaches to cleaning up San José: Eradication, Enforcement and Education. Mayor Gonzales launched the “Pick Up San José” anti-litter program last year as a collaborative effort with volunteers, neighborhoods, and many local and state agencies to make San José the cleanest big city in the nation.
