Mayor Gonzales recognizes childcare in San José is a priority service that is needed by all working families and community members.  San José’s goal is that every child will have access to quality and affordable childcare.  San José has worked with childcare providers and parents, and leaders in education, business and labor to find practical solutions to ensure that our families have access to quality care for their children.

San José has budgeted $10 million in our Redevelopment Agency budget to create a Child Care Development Fund.  Licensed child care providers and school districts could draw from this fund to help cover the cost of building new or expanding existing facilities so more children can have access to quality child care/preschool.   Target ages are 0-5 years.

San José also has a goal to train 1000 people over the next five years in how to start, operate or work in high quality childcare facilities. 1000 trained childcare providers could serve up to 8,000 more children per year.

Using the Mayor as a bully pulpit, San José has created a public education campaign about all the federal, state and county programs that exist to help parents pay for quality childcare while educating low income parents about childcare options and tax credits that are available to them.
