San Jose Helps All Children Achieve
San Jose is a model for how a city can actively help its teachers and children succeed.  Although San Jose
has no formal role in our local schools, our innovative efforts are working to ensure that all children can
achieve in Silicon Valley.

San Jose Youth Enter School Ready to Succeed
Making sure our youngest students get off to a successful start is a major focus for Mayor Gonzales.
He launched Smart Start San Jose, an early childhood education program that prepares children to
be “ready to learn” before they enter kindergarten.  These preschool centers are operated in partnership
with school districts, Head Start and private preschool providers.
The Mayor’s most recent initiative on early childhood learning is to expand the number of quality childcare options available to parents by adding 2,000 child-care seats in San Jose and to increase the number of qualified childcare providers in San Jose.
