“Graffiti
damages the quality of
life for residents in our
neighborhoods.”
Mayor
Ron Gonzales
Mayor
Gonzales made the
eradication of graffiti a
top priority when he
became mayor in 1999 as
part of his focus on
strengthening San José’s
neighborhoods.
City
staff first was directed
to remove graffiti in
parks within 24 hours of
notification and all other
graffiti within 48 hours.
In addition,
thousands of neighborhood
volunteers and many public
and private partners have
been enlisted to wipe out
graffiti through our
community.
The
results have been impressive. In four years, San José has reduced graffiti
by 95% according to our
annual survey done each
January. The success of our anti-graffiti program has become a model
for cities across the
nation, and it has
strengthened quality of
life for San Jose
residents in their parks
and neighborhoods.
