Mayor Gonzales stands with John Flaherty from the US Department of Transportation on May 28, 2004,  to announce the details of a major federal grant to be awarded to Mineta San Jose International Airport that will provide funds for upgrades and safety improvements to Runway 30 and as well provide for additional neighborhood acoustical treatment.  The project began in May and is scheduled for completion in fall of 2004.

Mayor Gonzales spoke, "Our airport is the gateway to Silicon Valley...it is essential that we invest in improvements that will support and enhance its competitiveness, safety and convenience to all...by extending runway 30 we are positioning San Jose Airport as the Bay Area's "Airport of Choice" in the 21st century, with two modern runways and technologically advanced systems."
