National Youth Service Day was held on Saturday, April 12, 2003.
The efforts were led by City Year San Jose - Silicon Valley to
increase public awareness about the contributions young people
make in their community.  Over 300 area youth restored playgrounds,
planted flowers, painted murals and restored libraries.

Mayor Gonzales showed his support for the event and spoke
to the large group before they ventured off to begin their
volunteer work throughout the city.

The Mayor was joined in the front row by Councilmember
Cindy Chavez; Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and others.

largest service event in the world!!
