Mayor Gonzales takes a photograph with Gordon Marks,
President of Swinerton Builders for the topping off celebration
at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose on
Friday, June 20, 2003!!  A new stage house for the
restored California Theater was being "topped off".
Construction on the theater began in the fall of 2001
and is scheduled to open in September of 2004.

The Mayor and Councilmembers were asked to autograph
the very last beam about to be placed on the stage house.

The workers stopped to smile for our camera!

Guests at the event

The Mayor and a guest look at the view of the
theatre from across the street.  The Mayor spoke at the
event saying, "The California Theatre is a symbol for
San Jose.  It represents our history from a time when
glorious theaters like this one were built in cities
across the nation to bring the excitement of the movies
to our residents...I share your anticipation for the first
performance in the new theater - I can hardly wait!"
