Gonzales participated in a Code Red Drill Family Reunion
Simulation on February 11, 2003. The event was a school safety
exercise for training in critical incident response.

event participants included many such as
the Mayor's Office; ESUSD; the ESUSD Safety Coalition;
Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District;
City of San Jose Safe Schools Campus Initiative;
San Jose Police Department; San Jose Fire Department;
Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood
Services; Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force;
Office of Emergency Services and the
Metropolitan Medical Task Force.

The
purpose of the project is to practice and assess
unified responses in order to focus upon continuous
improvement in responding to a critical incident at a school.

Mayor
Gonzales was joined by School Superintendent
Joe Coto as the Mayor told the crowd, "Your
time today is an
investment in keeping our children and our community safe –
one of our greatest priorities.
We all hope, from every
fiber of our being, that we never have to experience a
terrible tragedy such as the one we simulated today."
