Mayor
Gonzales spoke at the grand opening celebration of the
Martin Luther King, Jr., Library on Saturday, August 16, 2003.
The Mayor said, "Talk about turning a page and starting a
new chapter! We have the honor this morning of officially
opening the most innovative and advanced library in the nation!"

Guests
listen to the speakers before entering the beautiful library.
Mayor Gonzales said, "...Someone once said discovery consists
of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody
has thought. That certainly describes the two people who
discovered this library - Mayor Susan Hammer and
San Jose State President Bob Caret."

These patrons got an early start on reading!

The
new facility is a joint project between the City of San Jose and
San Jose State University. It is eight stories high with over 475,000
square feet of space. It has a capacity to hold almost 6,000 patrons.
This project was not only built ahead of schedule but under budget as well.
