INTRODUCTION
The City of San Jose, in conjunction with San Jose State, National Hispanic, and Santa Clara Universities, is accepting applications for its 2000-01 San Jose Future Teacher Loan Program. The loan program is designed to encourage San Jose residents to complete an approved teacher preparation program and to teach in a public school (K-12) that serves at least 50% San Jose residents. The City of San José will lend each successful applicant up to $3,000 annually (with a maximum of $15,000 over a five-year period). In exchange, the applicant commits to successfully complete an approved teacher preparation program at San Jose State, National Hispanic, or Santa Clara University, and to serve as a teacher in a San Jose public school upon completion of his/her education. The City will forgive an amount equal to the annual loan amount received (up to $3,000 per year or $15,000 over five years) for each subsequent year the loan recipient teaches in a K-12 public school serving at least 50% San Jose residents.
